Relax!

The first few weeks in any new position is stressful! Being a houseparent is no exception. There's just no way around it. Whether you're the authority/parent or the employee/child, most of this transition period is spent trying to figure each other out. Your way of doing things is most likely to be turned upside down -- plan on it. Get your "big person undies" on!

In midst of all this "turmoil", we put pressure on ourselves to prove our competence for this new position. If necessary, we often wind up pretending to be something we aren't. (After all, people might not like the "real" us!) Its not until later that we find out "we shouldn't judge a book by its cover"! (Take that for what its worth.)

If I could summarize my thoughts on this "soap box" issue into one word it would be: RELAX! Be yourself -- its much easier than pretending. You are God's unique creation! Go for it! Everyone will be happier!

I know! I know! Easier said than done! If its important, though, isn't it worth working for?

Carpe Diem!
